The Yam Festival

The period from August to September is when most Igbo communities celebrate their New Yam Festivals (known as: Ikeji, Iri Ji and Iwa Ji). These festivals are characterized by masquerade displays, dancing, wrestling and merriment, and mark the beginning of the harvest season with the consumption of the most important crop in Igbo society: the yam.
