Kola nuts (ọjị Igbo) occupy a sacred niche in Igbo culture. Whenever two or more people congregate for whatever occasion, tradition demands that the eldest male be given a kola nut to pray over, break and share amongst guests. The kola nut is believed to give longevity, success, and blessings to those who consume it. Beginning an occasion without first breaking kola is considered sacrilegious.
