Oluadah Equiano was an Igbo man who was abducted by slave traders in 1755 at the age of eleven in his hometown of Essaka, in modern-day Delta state. He was sold into slavery and later won his freedom and travelled the world as a merchant, author and explorer. He eventually settled in Great Britain and launched a ferocious abolitionist movement, becoming the world's first black abolitionist.
