Wounds Unhealed: The Biafran War

Updated: Jun 13, 2020

On the 15th of January 1970, exactly forty-six years ago today, the Nigerian-Biafran War came to a much anticipated close. Having claimed an estimated three million lives and displaced millions more, the conflict is universally recognized as the worst humanitarian disaster since the Second World War.

Although nearly half a century has passed since the conflict, today's Nigeria is still haunted by occasional pangs of violence and unrest, due to its failure to engage in open discourse to address many of the issues which led to and have resulted from its Civil War.

Despite being treated as a forbidden topic of discussion in today's society, memories of the War still remain fresh in the minds of the aging generations of Eastern Nigerian men and women.
