Area Scatter

Among the most-noteworthy Igbo musicians of the 60s and 70s is Area Scatter, a native of Ohaji-Egbema in what is now Imo State. Renown for his skill on the ubo aka (thumb piano), Area Scatter played a genre of music similar to Ekpili. He was originally a civil servant by profession, but soon opted out of his career and embraced music.

As a musician, he travelled around as a transvestite and performed at various occasions and before dignitaries of all ranks. His theatrical music style and his unique choice of clothing won him fame and international recognition as an exceptionally talented and interesting upcoming African musician. Unfortunately, his musical career was cut to an abrupt end after he was killed in a car accident in the early 70s. Area Scatter, who is said to have been queer, also fathered numerous children throughout Igboland.
