Benjamin Nnamdi Azikiwe, born in November 1904, was an Igbo man from Onitsha in what is now Anambra State. Born into a family of civil servants, he embraced Western education at a young age and travelled to the United States where he studied at several prestigious universities. After his education, he returned to Africa and began working with a pro-African newspaper and eventually got involved in politics and introduced himself to the world as a champion of African liberation and pro-Africanism, thus earning him the nickname "Zik of Africa". In his home country, Nigeria, he championed Nigerian nationalism during the colonial era and ultimately became the first president of Nigeria.
