Madu Kwe, Chi Ya Ekwe

"Mmadu kwe, Chi ya ekwe" is an Igbo idiomatic expression which translates to "when someone affirms his will to accomplish, his spirit will follow suit". It captures the egalitarian nature of Igbo cultural beliefs and presents the man as a vessel of great potency. The Igbo believe that a man's tendency to succeed, his luck, and his abilities and weaknesses are determined by the strength of his Chi (a personal spirit with which everyone is born). If a man constantly experiences hardship and suffering, he would be said to have a bad Chi. However, it is also believed that if such a man's will were determined enough, he would be capable of overcoming impossibilities and changing the nature of his Chi from bad to good.
