Loss During the Biafran War

The Nigerian-Biafran War (1967-1970) is the greatest calamity to ever befall the Igbo people. In the years prior to the war the Igbo were massacred throughout Nigeria simply because of their ethnicity. This forced Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu (the premier of the Eastern region of Nigeria at that time) to declare Biafra an independent and separate nation from Nigeria, so as to serve as a refuge for the Igbo fleeing persecution. At the end of the bloody three-year war that soon after erupted, over 2 million Igbo people lay dead - the majority of which being children. Today the scars of the war are still somewhat visible. It is believed that every Igbo family lost at least one relation to the war.
