The interior of an Onicha (Onitsha) chieftain’s domicile. Structures such as this were constructed by laborers knowledgeable in the fields of mathematics, physics, geology and other studies applicable to engineering and construction. The ceiling, made waterproof by layers upon layers of biodegradable insulants, is sloped downwards to effectively distribute the weight of the roofing, and sits upon a firm skeleton of high-grade wood. The additional pillars within the building act as supports for the roofing as well as canvases for aesthetic and religious artistry.#igbohistory
