Igboland (Àlà Ṇ́dị́ Ìgbò), the ancestral home of the Igbo peoples, is among the most densely-populated places in the world and arguably the most densely-populated place in Africa, with an average population density of 1000 people per square mile. The Igbo traditionally lived in small, heavily-populated villages as opposed to cities and towns, which came much later. Today the Igbo number in excess of thirty-five million in population and are one of the three largest ethnic groups in Nigeria.
